For too long, Salerno was considered nothing more than a gateway to the Amalfi Coast. A place to get off the train, catch a bus or ferry and disappear towards Positano or Amalfi without looking around. But in recent years, something has changed. Salerno has decided to make itself noticed \u2014 to show that it deserves far more than a quick stopover.<\/p>

Overlooking the gulf of the same name, between the sea and the mountains, it is a city where ancient and modern coexist without conflict. The medieval historic centre with its narrow alleyways and Norman Cathedral speaks to the contemporary seafront promenade designed by a world-renowned architect; the oldest medical school in Europe stands alongside the luminous installations that draw a million visitors every winter. Salerno is this balance: a city that knows how to look to the past without being imprisoned by it, that opens itself to the future while maintaining its Campanian identity. And for those visiting Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast, it is a discovery that is absolutely worth a full day.<\/p>

The seafront promenade and Zaha Hadid’s Maritime Terminal<\/strong><\/p>

The Salerno seafront is one of the most beautiful in southern Italy. Three kilometres of seaside walkway connecting the tourist harbour to the eastern part of the city, with views over the gulf that on clear days embraces the entire Amalfi Coast all the way to Capri.<\/p>

The people of Salerno live on the seafront year-round. In the morning you find joggers and cyclists on the cycle path; in the afternoon, families with children, couples strolling, elderly residents on benches. On summer evenings the promenade fills with people coming for an ice cream and the sea breeze. It is the city’s drawing room \u2014 the place to meet and socialise. But the true masterpiece of the seafront is the Maritime Terminal, designed by Zaha Hadid and inaugurated in 2016. The building resembles a giant oyster projecting towards the sea, with fluid and futuristic geometries clad in white ceramic. Inside, the structure is all curves and natural light flowing in through skylights.<\/p>

The Maritime Terminal is not only beautiful to look at \u2014 it is also the strategic departure point for reaching the Amalfi Coast by sea. From here, ferries and hydrofoils depart for Amalfi, Positano, Cetara and Maiori. It is more convenient than driving along the winding coastal road, faster than waiting for SITA buses, and offers a completely different perspective: the Amalfi Coast seen from the sea is even more spectacular. Next to the Terminal is the Villa Comunale, a nineteenth-century public garden with fountains, statues and manicured flowerbeds. Less touristy than other Neapolitan villas, it is frequented mainly by locals who come to read or let their children play in the shade of the maritime pines.<\/p>

The Cathedral of San Matteo: the medieval heart of the city<\/strong><\/p>

In the historic centre, on Piazza Alfano I, stands the Cathedral of Salerno dedicated to San Matteo, the city’s patron saint. Built in the eleventh century at the behest of Robert the Guiscard, it is one of the finest examples of Norman architecture in Campania. The atrium is monumental: a colonnaded portico with ancient columns salvaged from Roman buildings, an atmosphere of silence and majesty that contrasts with the chaos of the surrounding alleyways. The Byzantine bronze door, cast in Constantinople, is a masterpiece decorated with sacred scenes. The interior of the Cathedral has been modified over the centuries with baroque additions, but preserves its original Romanesque layout. The true treasure, however, is the crypt \u2014 a masterpiece of Neapolitan baroque with polychrome marbles, gilded stuccos and frescoes. Here lie the relics of Saint Matthew the Apostle, brought to Salerno in the tenth century.<\/p>

The bell tower, erected in the twelfth century, dominates the historic centre and is visible from many points across the city. Climbing it is not possible, but from the square in front of the Cathedral you can admire it in all its grandeur. On 21 September, Salerno celebrates San Matteo with a solemn procession through the streets of the centre. For the occasion, stuffed spleen with aromatic herbs is prepared \u2014 a traditional dish that is rarely found today but that speaks of popular Salernitano cuisine.<\/p>

Via dei Mercanti and the medieval historic centre<\/strong><\/p>

From the Cathedral, Via dei Mercanti extends outward \u2014 the main artery of the historic centre. The name tells of the city’s commercial past: this was once where workshops, markets and trade with merchants arriving by sea were concentrated. Today Via dei Mercanti is an elegant street for shopping, with shops, boutiques and caf\u00e9s. But it preserves its medieval charm in the historic buildings, the arches connecting the structures, the side alleyways that open up without warning. Walking through the historic centre, you constantly encounter layers upon layers of history. The complex of San Pietro a Corte preserves a Roman thermal bath transformed into a Lombard church. The Medieval Aqueduct, also known as the “Devil’s Bridge”, crosses the centre with its great arches: built in the ninth century, it still carries water into the city today.<\/p>

The alleyways are narrow, the buildings face one another, artisan workshops survive alongside modern shops. It is not the monumental historic centre of Naples, but it has a more intimate and authentic charm. Families still live here \u2014 elderly residents doing their shopping in the neighbourhood markets, children playing in the small squares.<\/p>

The Garden of Minerva, hidden in the web of alleyways, is one of Salerno’s most beautiful treasures. Founded in the thirteenth century as a didactic botanical garden of the Salerno Medical School \u2014 the first of its kind in Europe \u2014 it is organised on terraced levels with medicinal and aromatic plants, and also offers a panoramic view over the city and the sea. It is an oasis of peace and beauty that few tourists know about.<\/p>

Arechi Castle: a panorama over the city and the gulf<\/strong><\/p>

At the top of a hill dominating Salerno, three hundred metres above sea level, stands the Castle of Arechi. It takes its name from the Lombard duke Arechi II, who expanded it in the eighth century, transforming it into a powerful fortress. The castle today houses two museums with medieval artefacts, ceramics, weapons and coins found during excavations. But the real reason to climb all the way up here is the panorama. From the castle walls, the view takes in the whole of Salerno, the gulf, the Amalfi Coast rising on the horizon, and on clear days you can see as far as the Calabrian coast.<\/p>

Reaching the Castle requires a little effort: from the city you travel up by bus or by car along a panoramic road. But it is absolutely worth it \u2014 especially at sunset, when the low light of the sun sets the gulf and the surrounding mountains ablaze with gold. The castle is open from Tuesday to Sunday. The entrance fee is minimal and free for under-18s and over-65s. Inside there is also a refreshment point with a panoramic terrace.<\/p>

Luci d’Artista: winter magic<\/strong><\/p>

If you find yourself in Salerno between late November and late January, you cannot miss the Luci d’Artista. It is the event that has transformed the city into a winter tourist destination, attracting around one million visitors every year. These are not the usual commercial Christmas lights. The Luci d’Artista are genuine artistic light installations that transform squares, streets and parks into open-air works of art. Each year the theme changes and international artists create spectacular installations. The historic centre, Via dei Mercanti, the seafront promenade and the public gardens fill with lights, colours and luminous sculptures. Walking through an illuminated Salerno is a magical experience \u2014 especially in the evening when the installations come alive. The city transforms into an open-air museum, free to visit.<\/p>

During the Luci d’Artista period, Christmas markets are also set up with typical Campanian products: buffalo mozzarella, limoncello, Vietri ceramics, artisan sweets. And since 2016, a giant panoramic Ferris wheel with sea views has been installed along the seafront promenade.<\/p>

The connection with the Amalfi Coast<\/strong><\/p>

Salerno is the ideal starting point for exploring the Amalfi Coast without a car. From the Maritime Terminal, ferries depart for Amalfi, Positano, Maiori, Minori and Cetara. The journey takes 30 to 60 minutes depending on the destination and offers a spectacular view of the Coast from the sea. From Salerno’s main railway station, SITA buses also depart along the Coast by road. They are inexpensive but often crowded in summer. If you are staying in Sorrento, Salerno is reachable in 30 minutes by ferry. It makes a perfect day trip \u2014 perhaps in winter, when the Amalfi Coast is peaceful and Salerno glows with the Luci d’Artista.<\/p>

Conclusion: Campania’s pleasant surprise<\/strong><\/p>

Salerno is Campania’s pleasant surprise. The city you didn’t expect to love, the one you had planned as nothing more than a transit point \u2014 and instead it wins you over with its understated elegance, its blend of ancient and modern, its ability to reinvent itself without betraying its roots. It doesn’t have the fame of Naples, the glamour of Positano or the breathtaking views of Amalfi. But it has something precious: it is authentic, liveable, human in scale. It is a city that Campanians know and love, that tourists are beginning to discover, that deserves far more than a passing glance.<\/p>

If you are visiting the Amalfi Coast, give Salerno at least a day. Walk along the seafront, step inside the Cathedral, lose yourself in the alleyways of the historic centre, climb to the Castle for the view. And if you happen to be there in winter, let yourself be enchanted by the Luci d’Artista.<\/p>
